It is fairly difficult for players to choose a good reed that will suit them. It is really experience that helps you detect a good one.
However don't worry, James Begg will select reeds to suit you until you gain more experience. Use Mr Begg's expertise, and this will save you money as you will not be buying all sorts of unsuitable reeds.
Plastic Drone Reeds
Today many pipers use plastic drone reeds. The plastic drone reeds sound very similar to the traditional cane reeds. Several pipers use the plastic drone reeds for their convenience and ease of use. However, do not dismiss the superior sound that can be achieved with a traditional cane reed. A good set of cane reeds whilst difficult to set and balance will give a sweet and warm sound. This is where you need to develop your piping skills.
